Indictment, based on the cases of former New York Assistant District Attorney Eleazar Lipsky, was a factual account of the investigatory work that must be completed before an alleged criminal can be indicted to stand trial.

The documental series first aired over the CBS network on January 29, 1956 and ran for three years on a sustaining basis.

Although the dramatizations were taken from actual files, both the events and names were changed to protect those involved. The role of Assistant District Attorney Edward McCormick was portrayed by Nat Polen, his partner Tom Russo was played by Jack Arthur.
